Lakes are viewed as important bodies of fresh water. The Great Lakes actually consist of five lakes that are found near the border between Canada and the United States. Because
of their sheer size, they are common knowledge around the world and see "lake effect snow" during the winter months. The Great Lakes had been beautiful and useful lakes but
have experienced ecological problems related to over fishing, toxic waste and logging in recent years. There have in fact been many problems that the lakes have endured. Are the Great
Lakes typical of what other lakes have experienced? Are there exemplary lakes that scientists should examine? The Great Lakes have been harmed by waste coming from factories and the addition
of sea lampreys and other parasites from ballast of foreign ships (Miller, 1992). The ecology of the Great Lakes is not as good as it could be. There are actually
a myriad of problems. Elton (2000) explains: " North Atlantic sea lampreys, having driven three endemic fishes of the Great Lakes to extinction, still kill many lake trout and other
fishes and impede the rebuilding of established populations and fisheries, despite an annual outlay of $10,000,000 to combat them" (p.viii). It seems that the size of the lakes, and how
they are used impede the natural splendor of what they could be. Some might argue that lake ecology is tough business, but one lake in Montana seems to have
become a model for success. Flathead lake, in Bigfork, Montana happens to be the largest, natural freshwater lake in the west and is viewed as one of the cleanest
bodies of water in the world (Wheeler, 1998). One can see the effects of the status quo. In other words, with such cleanliness, one would expect to see wildlife flourish
