While Tovold’s motive is to control others, Crito’s is to watch out for the interest of his friend. the character Tovald in Henrik Ibsens "A Dolls House" and Platos Crito may appear to offer little in the way of comparison. On closer consideration, however, it becomes apparent that the motive, reputation, and value system of these two men are indeed quite different and that a comparison of the two reveals much in terms of two extremes of human character. In Ibsens "A Dolls House" we find the character Tovald entangled in interactions a variety of other characters. In Platos Crito, on the other hand, the interaction is between Socrates and Crito. Consequently Tovalds character is reflected through a variety of relationships and interactions while Critos is reflected through his one-on-one interaction with Socrates. The plots of these two works are as different as the primary characters themselves. In "A Dolls House" we find a variety of subplots. The primary plot, however, revolves around the issues of control, money, and fidelity. Tovald is married to Nora who is not only unfaithful but deceitful in other ways as well. In addition to dealing with the character flaws of his wife Tovald must deal with those of his subordinates. Despite his law background, he is employed as a bank manager and has a number of employees who report directly to him. One of these employees, Krogstad, is familiar with the details of an act of forgery committed by Nora and threatens to reveal those details unless she convinces Tovald to not fire him. The plot of "A Dolls House" and Tovalds relation to that plot become even more complex as the story unfolds. It seems that yet ...
