Childrens books are typically written to appeal as much to the childs visual sense as to their comprehension of the written world. The illustrations found
in this genre, however, can vary significantly both in regard to the media utilized and in regard to an artists particular execution of that media. Factors such as color
hue and saturation and line and shape have a tremendous impact on the final product. So too does the way a particular artist choose to depict their subjects, whether
they take a more realistic approach or an abstract approach and even how they handle such details as to how they represent the human eye and its movements. A
comparison of the work any specific childrens book illustrators will reveal many distinctive differences in execution and product. Two childrens book illustrators in particular, however, serve as a particularly
interesting comparison. These illustrators are Pat Cummings and Rosemary Wells. Both Pat Cummings and Rosemary Wells are accomplished illustrators. Both
have received awards and accolades for their work and both have produced a huge collection of work. Both reveal that they were voracious readers not only while they were
children but even today. Each states that she was captivated with such things as magic and fantasy when she was a child and retains that fascination even as an
adult. That, however, is about the end of the comparisons that can be made regarding these artists. Rosemary Wells and
