Art varies according not only to medium and artistic technique but also in accordance with a variety of social and personal factors. These
influences can have a tremendous impact on the artistic process as well as the final product. While thousands of examples could be presented to illustrate these contentions, two should
suffice. The work of Degas and Burne-Jones is particularly appropriate for this application however. From that work Degas "Woman Seated Beside a Vase of Flowers" and Burne-Jones "Chant
dAmour" ("The Love Song") are of particular interest. Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Degas were both from the latter half of the nineteenth century
but they represent two different artistic disciplines. Burne-Jones lived and worked in England between 1833 and 1898 while Edgar Degas lived and worked in France between 1834 and
1917. While Degas was both a sculptor and a painter, Burne-Jones work is very distinguishable from Degas. While he adds detail in a complex sense, however, Degas adds
interest with his simplistic approach to his artistic production. Initially Degas considered himself a classical artist but later in his career he would
lean more and more toward the impressionist movement which was underway. This transition can be credited to the fact that Degas admired the directness of impressionistic technique as well
as its portrayal of contemporary subjects. He would never full abandon classical art, however. Instead he would seek to integrate the immediacy of impressionism with the classical.
