story involving Joseph and Potiphar, there are similarities. In Genesis, it is noted that God found favor with Joseph and blessed him. He was in charge of a home and
had a master, and his masters wife decided that she wanted to sleep with him, and he said no. He continued to resist her advances, and one day, the wife
told everyone, including her husband that it was Joseph making advances and insulting her by doing so. In effect, she was a scorned woman. Joseph was simply being a good
servant and did not want to commit adultery, despite her advances. Joseph would end up in prison as a result of the incident. In Racines Phaedra, the story is
a bit different and more complicated. Hippolytus is told that he cannot marry Aricia but is in love with her. They are forbidden by the king to be together, but
it is possible that the king is dead anyway. From the outset, it seems as if the star-crossed lover theme is present in both works. The fact that Joseph rejects
the advances of his bosss wife does not mean he is not interested in her. While she was pursing him, at one point he explains why he is not accepting
of her advances: "Lo, having me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my hand; he is not
greater in this house that I am; nor has he kept back anything form me except yourself, because you are his wife; how can I do this great wickedness, and
