over this nation to help the victims of the terrorist attacks. In light of this major event, it is interesting to examine the works of two political scientists who
claim the American public is disconnected from the political process overall. In their books, both Volgy and Putnam assert that the people in this country are no longer tied
closely to their society and to the politicians as well. This is amid an environment of mistrust toward the government in general. While these two authors echo
many of the same beliefs, they have differences as well. It is important to understand their points of view in order to better understand the climate of the country
in terms of political participation. Furthermore, both agree that an understanding of the current situation is necessary in order to make any changes for the future. Thomas
