and set up trading posts in the Middle East and Egypt. Greek culture was spreading across the Mediterranean, and Greek commerce was rapidly making the city-states wealthy and powerful" ("Ancient,"
2005). The advent of the Minoan civilization was integral to the development of Greek culture as a whole. A student also notes that at about the same time
as the eruption of civilization in the Eastern Mediterranean, there was also the emergence of an independent civilization in the Indus River valley. The character of each peoples-the Minoan and
the Indus Valley contingent-is decidedly different, but that difference is subtle. In part, the difference seems to come forth in attitude, and this is best exemplified by examining their art
work. The character of the Minoan/Mycenaean Greek civilizations is rather exemplary. The Minoan civilization would emerge in the context of the Eastern Mediterranean region. Unlike earlier warlike or primitive cultures,
the Minoan actually has a lot of redeeming qualities. It should be noted that about 1700 BC, this sophisticated culture would emerge in Crete ("Barbarians," 1999). The region was very
peaceful. In fact, there has been only scant evidence of a military force ("Barbarians," 1999). For the most part, this region seemed to live in harmony. The culture lasted for
centuries and was based on bureaucracy and trade ("Barbarians," 1999). The culture did influence the development of a cosmopolitan culture when there was Roman dominance. Of course, this was
