which were filmed in black and white, authored and narrated by Rod Serling, and depict slices of life that turn to horror. In fact, it seems as if Serling was
able to hone in on frightening scenarios that start out rather mundane. The "Eye of the Beholder" for example, provides a shocking scenario where a woman by the name of
Janet Tyler undergoes plastic surgery. The audience is surprised when the bandages come off and the result is a woman of beauty. After all, a Twilight Zone viewer would expect
that a monster would appear. Additionally, as the episode progresses it becomes clear that the surgery did not work and that the result was negative. Why? At the end of
the show, it is revealed that everyone in the world looks hideous except for a few who look different. The actors who look different and are not sporting masks are
considered the "freaks" of the world and put away so that they can live out of view. These unseemly beings that are actually beautiful in reality, are considered hideous in
this world created by Serling. This particular episode prompts the audience to reflect on beauty. After all, why is someone considered beautiful and others homely? The title of the episode
"Eye of the Beholder," suggests that beauty is, as the clich? goes, in the eye of the beholder. Another episode is entitled "Nightmare at 20,000" feet where a passenger, Bob
Wilson, who had been considered mentally unstable sees a creature on an airplane wing. In the end, he kills the being, and is taken away. Later, it is learned that
the wing of the plane did hit something after all, leaving the viewer to conclude that in fact, Wilson was correct. There was really a monster on the planes wing.
