on leadership, and this is true to an extent. Obviously, The Prince provides a great deal of information on how leaders should rule, but also, there is a suggestion that
autocracy should reign whereas in Discourses, there is no such thing. Rather, there is a sense that democracy is key. While the contradiction may appear obvious, what is not so
obvious is that Machiavelli was a savvy leader in his own right. He did not embrace one way of leadership and truthfully, while The Prince does go more to dictatorship,
that is really not what Machiavelli wanted at all. He simply wanted a leader to implement the will of the people, whether or not that will was what the people
believed they wanted. In other words, the leader is supposed to have the wisdom to do the right thing in the right circumstances. Sometimes, the people are ignorant of just
what the right thing to do is, and so, a leader must set the pace. This is what Machiavelli believed to be important. Both works focus on events of
the day. Some theorists do not fault Machiavelli for some of the harsh sentiments to come from The Prince, for example, due to the day and time in which they
were written. Of course, no true political analyst can be excused simply for that reason. Still, it makes sense to note that Discourses simply relays information about democracy, at least
as it existed at the time. Machiavelli analyzed democracy in the context of that work, whereas in The Prince, there was attention to staunch, autocratic leadership. It pays to evaluate
