paper compares the Spartan culture with that of 20th century totalitarian systems. Conclusion There are certainly similarities between a totalitarian culture and that of ancient Sparta, but not enough to
say that they are identical. A totalitarian system has an "official ideology, consisting of an official body of doctrine covering all the vital aspects of mans existence to which everyone
living in that society is supposed to adhere" (Rogers). Furthermore, this ideology has a specific purpose: it is focused on bringing mankind to a final perfect state, "based upon a
radical rejection of the existing society and conquest of the world for a new one" (Rogers). Certainly the Nazi ideology of racial purity and a race of "Aryans" is typical
of this type of thinking, as is their idea of world conquest. Sparta too has an ideology to which everyone was supposed to adhere, without exception, and it was aimed
at perfecting their society. Boys born in Sparta ("Spartiate") started military training at the age of seven when they were "taken from their mother, and until the age of 30
and possibly beyond were dedicated to their training and to their service to the state" ("The Culture of Sparta"). Another source says that once in the army, a Spartan served
in the military until age 60 (Hooker). It was his entire life. Another trait of a totalitarian system is that it comprises a "single mass party led typically by one
man, the dictator, and consisting of a relatively small percentage of the total population" (Rogers). There is a "hard core" group that is completely dedicated to the partys ideology and
