virginity to the tantric sex practitioner who seeks enlightenment, there is something sacred about the sexual experience. When evaluating sex under the microscope of religion, different attitudes are found in
various sects of Christianity and Buddhism. Sex and how it is embraced in Christian religions vary by sect, but basically in Christian tradition, it is thought that sex is
primarily for procreation in the context of marriage. Times have changed, and there exists people who are called "Cafeteria Christians" who choose what they want to do. For example, many
Christians who attend church have had premarital sex and for those who wait, they often use birth control. If todays Catholics did not, there would likely be larger families in
America. Many Christians in todays world do not wait until marriage to have sexual relations. However, there is a movement to embrace virginity. Yet, this movement includes many who are
in a minority. Today, regardless of religion, sex is everywhere. This was not always the case and Christian ideals have changed over the years. During the third century, it was
thought that one should either marry, or completely abstain from sex (Chidester 111). It was how a Christian could keep his soul in tact (Chidester 111). Premarital sex is one
