(Cheng & Podolsky, 1996). There are obvious reasons for this. If a company has too much product, it ends up losing money. For example, a bookstore is excited about a
new book and purchases 100 copies from the publisher, expecting it to sell well. The bookstore only sells three copies. Thus, they will end up selling the additional companies at
a discounted price and will likely lose money in the long run. However, in the publishing world, the just in time idea is being employed. There is now, for example,
the print on demand concept where authors can have their works published and not have to shell out a lot of money to print companies that do not sell. The
JIT approach similarly combines a number of elements to offset the costs of storage and manufacturing of items that are not profitable. Much here has to do with quantity. Benefits
of JIT are improved "quality, productivity and efficiency, improved communication and decreases in costs and wastes" (Cheng & Podolsky, 1996, p.2). Lean manufacturing, on the other hand, is a bit
like JIT but there are stark differences. Lean manufacturing includes five main ingredients which are manufacturing flow, organization, process control, metrics, and logistics (Feld, 2001). Flow examines things such as
physical changes and design standards which are a part and parcel of the cell, and organization focuses on the identification of roles (Feld, 2001). Process control considers monitoring and controlling
to examine ways of improving the process (Feld, 2001). Clearly, a keen eye is kept on manufacturing processes. Metrics examines performance measurements and targeted improvements and logistics involves the planning
and controlling in respect to the flow of materials (Feld, 2001). Lean manufacturing is apparently a good model. It involves quality control at each step of the way. Yet, JIT
