how do these candidates differ and how are they alike? First, critics of Obama claim that he does not have enough experience, but while Clinton is a good decade older, she is not much more experienced than he in terms of politics. Packer (2008) explains that in the Democratic primaries, it has been characterized as a race between experience and change. This in fact is a sentiment that has been relayed by media over and over again and reinforced by the candidates. Hillary has in fact compared "Obamas soaring rhetoric to her experience in policy" ("Hillary Watch," 2008, p. 11). Yet, Hillary Clintons eight year stint in the White House hardly qualifies as experience. She was not in charge of anything and did not have to make critical decisions. While it is true that some First Ladies have been more involved in the running of the country than others, it hardly qualifies anyone for the presidency itself. Both Obama and Clinton were practicing attorneys turned Senators. Each has some experience in the Senate, but again, in comparison with others say on the Republican side, their experience in Washington is scant at best. Hillary is a bit older, but Obama is still middle aged and has some experience under his belt as well. In respect to the economy, Obama highlights that fact that the free market economy is something that has been integral in Americas progress ("Barack Obama," 2008). While Obama is often vague about remedies for the troubled economy, Hillary Clinton has a variety of plans on different issues. For example, she wants to restore the middle class as she says that the middle class is not succeeding today ("Hillary for President," 2008).
