during this year, three new medical dramas were launched: Trauma, Three Rivers, and Mercy (Bentley, 2009). Some of the best known shows that are still running are House, Greys Anatomy,
Private Practice, and Mercy. Some popular older television series that no longer provide first run episodes include ER, Chicago Hope, and St. Elsewhere. While medical dramas often focus on
the patients that enter the hospital and their medical conditions, there is a soap opera quality to many of the new dramas. Greys Anatomy and Mercy have a lot in
common in that there is much suspense surrounding the personal lives of the nurses and physicians. The shows are similar in that much of the action takes place
in the hospital. At least that is the primary setting. However, Mercy takes place in New Jersey where Greys Anatomy is located in Seattle, Washington. Interestingly, both shows feature people
who have come back from the war and have ties to Iraq. In Mercy, one of the protagonists Veronica Flanagan Callahan returns from Iraq where she had an affair with
a physician who followed her to New Jersey. Veronica is involved in an on again, off again, marriage as well. Greys Anatomy, unlike Mercy, is in its sixth season and
has only introduced a solider in recent months. Owen Hunt arrived from Iraq in the fifth season. During the sixth season--ironically at the same time that Mercy debuted-- Dr. Teddy
Altman who knew Hunt in Iraq, appears. Similar to Mercy, there are love triangles involved with these individuals who served very closely with one another in Iraq. One important difference
in respect to the shows is that Greys Anatomy looks down on nurses and hardly features them as main characters. In fact, from the shows inception, nurses are frowned upon.
