This format still allows for the traditional sections expected in a newspaper. These sites contain general news, business news, weather, sports, kid features, community coverage, a guide to local museums, theaters and restaurants, and advertising plus often times much more. Photos are of high quality as are the articles. Electronic sites are replete with professionally produced graphics and all the other amenities that one has come to expect from a newspaper. What is confusing in reviewing web-based news sites is their overwhelming similarities. Because of the strict confines of text-based HTML format there are no lines of demarcation between information web sites produced by newspapers, those produced by radio and television stations and those produced by online services such as America Online. There are currently over 4,000 web-based news sites available online which are recognized as operating to professional journalistic standards (Levins, 1997). There are thousands of other sites which provide some degree of news reporting. Just reviewing a few of these leaves the viewer with an overall feeling that all of these sites are similar. For the purposes of this paper five such sites were visited with the intent of comparing and contrasting their format, content, and features. These included the web sites for two major newspapers (the Los Angeles Times and the Orange County Register), the web site for a major radio/television station (WCCO), the web site for a major online service (America Online), and the web site for Yahoo, an online search engine.
