New Ageism wholeheartedly embraces ideas to emanate from the old philosophy of Buddhism for example and certainly the Hindu ideas of acceptance and reincarnation is something that has become incorporated in postmodern society. On the other side of the coin is Christianity and Islam, two religions that have emanated from Judaism; these each preach intolerance in some respects. In other ways, the Western religions embrace tolerance as the people are taught to love one another despite character flaws. Still, there is quite a difference in the way in which Eastern and Western religions value life and this permeates society in different ways. It affects society politically, socially and intellectually certainly, and one can see the manifestation in part is dependent on government type. Free societies that allow freedom of religion have the most diverse natures. Ironically, it is the strictest religions--those associated with the West--that thrive in democracies. In China and Japan, for instance, certain religions at one time or another had been entrenched in society and so affected every facet of it. That was of course political, but its existence would also lay the groundwork for the entire population to embrace the concepts as rote. In order to explore these ideas more thoroughly, it helps to look at the precepts of the various religions. First, buddhism is a rather well known ideology and has been incorporated into many New Age movements and ideas like EST. Deepak Chopras best-selling books rely on buddhist principles and many of the principles do make sense. Many people speak of karma which is really just the cause and effect relationship. However, in Buddhism, ones karmic destiny may be tied to acts done in a prior life. Still, the principle is rather universal as most everything is based on the cause and effect idea. ...
