While the acceptance of self-esteem varies from person to person, certain individuals will have a tendency towards reduced self-esteem. Drug users for example generally have low self-esteem (Klee, 2001). Many female drug addicts in fact come from dysfunctional families and have "a learned sense of failure that presents as low self-esteem" (Myers & Midence, 1998, p.205). While it may be a given that drug addiction and self-esteem are closely related, what is not as obvious is the importance of self-esteem. In respect to rehabilitation, improving the self-esteem of individuals is vital to success. Many programs do advocate that recovering addicts do things for themselves, and take care of themselves, in order to increase self-esteem. Mentors tell them to buy new clothing, have their hair styled and essentially do things for themselves as opposed to only doing things for others. While it is true that self-esteem is generally enhanced by these programs, it is also true that some programs are better than others when it comes this aspect of recovery. For example, when recovering from addiction, is a Methadone treatment program better than a program utilizing acupuncture? Although those are only two of many remedies for drug addiction, they will be examined to see which one is best as it respects the enhancement of self-esteem. II. Methadone Programs and Effect on Self-Esteem Methadone programs are viewed as helpful, but perhaps not the best of all treatment programs. At best, methadone treatment "provides an arena for reevaluation of and recommitment to an individuals life and well being" (Dilley, 1998, p. 127). Does methadone treatment programs increase self-esteem? The short answer is yes, but it is a rather complex issue.
