more of what exists in modern society. At the same time, it seems that the big three--Marx, Durkheim and Weber--share theories that are still very much applicable today. Marx for example is best known for his theory of communism. Communism has left an important mark on society and is still a viable option for leaders who continue to believe in the model. Even if one contends that communication is evil and can never work, socialism is something that has been gaining some ground. Marx is truly relevant today. Similarly, Durkheim is best known for his theory of anomie which is a sense of normlesness. It seems that in many societies, and times in history, anomie sets in. During the Vietnam War period, the young people threw out the entire "establishment," and replaced it with their own peaceful paradigm. This drastic view seems to have manifested because the war changed the thinking in America. If life is cheap, then why put on a suit and tie and go to work? Max Weber is well known for his ideas about bureaucracy and in fact, this is something still pertinent today. With school systems that operate as if it is the 1950s, and motor vehicle bureaus having endless lines and ridiculous regulations, it seems that Webers theory is quite appropriate in the analysis of modern society. In their own way, each of the theorists predicted the structure and character of social relations in modern society. Marx saw class as being relevant and it still is. The hippie movement disintegrated and modernity is accentuated by wealth. The rich versus poor model is very much alive. Durkheims ideas about anomie similarly provide a window in which one can analyze society as does Webers ideas about bureaucracy, an concept that seems to have stuck. Part of ...
