variety of religions in the world. It is thought that the great religions of the world are Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Confucianism, Taoism, Hinduism, and Christianity. ("The Bible," 1988). A student
writing on this subject may want to focus on just three. In comparing and contrasting Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism, much knowledge about world religions will be gleaned.
Christianity, for example, is essentially a sect of Judaism. Judaism is based on the Old Testament and does not recognize the New Testament that
names Jesus Christ as the Messiah. Similarly, Islam is also a sect of Judaism, but instead of Jesus Christ as their leader, Muhammad is considered a messenger of God. Hinduism
is a bit more flexible. It is thought to be an umbrella-type term for the religious life that had been developed in India at around 2000 B.C. (Hunt, 1978). It
includes the worship of gods as well as the spirits of nature (1978). Mahatma Gandhis life is just one example of the meaning of Hinduism as it has been expressed
during the twentieth century (1978). Buddhism embraces similar concepts as Hinduism, but, unlike Hinduism, it has a founder known as Guatama
Buddha (Hunt, 1978). Interestingly, Buddha grew up as a Hindu in India but had achieved enlightenment through meditation (1978). The many sects of Buddhism, which is essentially a sect of
