Sometimes, they live with their children who care for them, and are often considered a burden, or perhaps that is what onlookers say. Sometimes they are quiet and unassuming. Other
old women are controlling and manipulative. Still others begin to lose their sense of self, or their sanity. And many are depressed of feel as if life is not worth
living. In two stories, Death in the Woods by Sherwood Anderson and A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery OConnor, the protagonists are old women, who end up
dead. The two women in these stories could not be more different from one another. Ma Grimes is an elderly lady who spent much of her time with animals. She
seemed to love animals. The narrator in fact says, describing what her life had been like: "The woman who died was one destined to feed animal life. Anyway, that is
all she ever did. She was feeding animal life before she was born, as a child, as a young woman working on the farm of the German, after she married,
when she grew old and when she died. She fed animal life in cows, in chickens, in pigs, in horses, in dogs, in men. Her daughter had died in childhood
and with her one son she had no articulate relations. On the night when she died she was hurrying homeward, bearing on her body food for animal life" (Anderson PG).
Death in the Woods is above all a poignant work, and one dedicated to humanity and human kindness. The woman had been, on her last days on Earth, preparing
