with awe while at the same time they shrink away in horror, perhaps expecting ghosts or goblins to be associated with the dead, like some frightening campfire tale. Indeed, a childs first experience with death can be a profound experience, and one not readily forgotten. In his book "Dubliners" author James Joyce introduces us to a young character in "The Sisters." This young man experiences death for the first time, and it is profoundly evident this is his first experience with the serious experience of death. Perhaps the first and foremost emotion associated with a childs first experience with death is that of curiosity. This is certainly the case in Joyces tale, for we see in the first scene the youngster is walking past the window of his old friend, curiously wondering if he has indeed died. "Night after night I had passed the house (it was vacation time) and studied the lighted square of window: and night after night I had found it lighted in the same way, faintly and evenly. If he was dead, I thought, I would see the reflection of candles on the darkened blind, for I knew that two candles must be set at the head of a corpse" (Joyce PG). This natural curiosity grows as the boy wonders about the death of the old man. After dreaming about it all night, when he awakens he goes down the street to look at the old mans house. What does he expect to see? This is nothing but curiosity welling up inside him that causes him to want to view the old mans house, to see perhaps if there is something different about it.
