A 7 page research paper which examines two articles. 'Quilts, the Great American Art,' by Patricia Mainardi (1973) and 'Secluded Vision: imagines of feminine experience,' by Anne Higonnet (1987) offer two contrasting visions of women's art in the nineteenth century. On one level the view of each author is essentially the same‹that view being that a male-dominated perspective on art has failed to recognize the intrinsic value of the art forms routinely produced by women as part of their domestic sphere of influence. routinely produced by women as part of their domestic sphere of influence. On the other hand, their views are also distinctly different. Mainardi is much more forceful in her
argument that quilting represents a legitimate and significant art form that has been undervalued due to male bias. Higonnet is much more hesitant about asserting that the sketches and albums
assembled by nineteenth century women have value beyond offering an interesting sociological perspective on that time period and how nineteenth century women perceived themselves. Higonnet skirts around the issue
as to whether or not womens art has value. She states this sentiment several times: "No one image or one album provides a key, but taken together and considered contextually,
amateur images show us how women visualized themselves" (177). Given this statement, and at first glance, Higonnet appears to be saying that female art has intrinsic value from a
social standpoint but not as art, per se. However, she also appears to feel that this form of female art is art, but that it should be judged by a
different criteria then is usually applied to mainstream art. Higonnet may have been evasive as to her true point by trying to encompass all of the possible implications of
this form of art. It is quite true that these albums, paintings, and sketches do provide interesting insight into how these nineteenth century women perceived themselves and their role in
