deal with the Devil. In the first part of the piece, Faust desires Gretchen and he is able to attract her. Yet, everything goes terribly wrong. She has a child
from the union between the two, but she drowns the baby. Her brother is killed. So many things occur surrounding the ordeal that it hardly seems worthwhile. It is a
sort of "be careful what you wish for" situation. In the second part of the work, Faust goes to heaven anyway. In some manner, the play addresses questions of freedom
and modernity. The theme of freedom is clearly exemplified in Faust. After all, the protagonist enters into an agreement that hinders his freedom. The Devil helps him in the
present world, but later, he will be obedient to the Devil. At least, that is the plan. In some way, this is a trade where the Devil is served, or
Faust is served. This situation goes to higher spiritual questions concerning free will. After all, Faust makes a decision but it affects many people. It is similar to a situation
where someone could put a spell on others. Then the concept of free will has to be examined. Is Faust in control of his world? Is he in control of
others? Another thematic element is that of modernity. Ziolkowski writes: "Oswald Spengler featured Faust, with his yearning for totality, as the appropriate image of the modern age..." While nothing
in the play is particularly modern, the concepts are, and there are a lot of elements in the work that are certainly applicable today. Another writing that addresses similar
