the mid-sixteenth century, in which the novel was set. It was, at the time, a highly controversial tale of adultery, illegitimacy and hypocrisy and their religious and social repercussions.
Hester Prynne was Hawthornes long-suffering protagonist, who for her adulterous sin, was paraded in front of the townspeople (who would thereafter shun her) and forced to wear the embroidered
crimson A for the rest of her life. The novel focused upon how Hester and her child Pearl struggled to lead dignified lives despite the social oppression. It
also identified Hesters lover as the community minister, Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, who was portrayed as physically ailing from the inner turmoil caused by his sin and the hypocrisy of representing
the local pillar of moral integrity. His malady is treated by a doctor who happens to be Hesters wronged husband, the cold and embittered Roger Chillingworth. Of course,
in the end, Dimmesdales guilt consumes him and he must die; moralistic sentiments of the time would have been satisfied with nothing less. But the novel deviates from convention
by its portrayal of Hester and her elfin child. Hester never completely fades into the New England landscape, as her neighbors would have no doubt preferred. She stays
and makes a life for herself and Pearl as a seamstress and though her scarlet letter defines her social identity, Hesters strong will does not allow it to replace her
own sense of self. As portrayed by Hawthorne, she makes the best out of the situation and her daughter gives her the determination to carry on as best she
