Dee is the accomplished and beautiful daughter who has made good by leaving home, this paper argues that Maggie is not nearly as limited as she seems to be on a first reading. Discussion There is very little action in the story, which is a subtle character study of a mother and her daughters. Dee, who is beautiful, chic, and considers herself both superior and insightful, is coming home for a visit; this makes Maggie very nervous as well as unhappy (Walker). The story is narrated by the girls mother who sees beauty in her scarred, shy daughter as well as in her outgoing, bold one; she also sees through some of Dees outrageous decisions, such as rechristening herself "Wangero" (Walker). It seems that Walker might be making fun of the way in which some African-Americans either adopt or make up names they think sound African. At any rate, Maggie is presented as being panicked by Dees imminent arrival; when her older sister does arrive, accompanied by a man nobodys met before, she tries to disappear (Walker). But this should not be construed as an indication that Maggie is stupid, because shes actually very sharp. She says almost nothing, but Walker gives a reader the distinct impression that she is listening to everything that everyone says. This is borne out when Dee says that shes going to take two old quilts with her: "I heard something fall in the kitchen, and a minute later the kitchen door slammed" (Walker). Its clear that Maggie overheard Dees comment, dropped something in shock, and then shut the door to keep from hearing anything else.
