Although not as inevitable as taxes and dying, aging is a process that eventually confronts those of us lucky (or unlucky) enough to
become eligible for Social Security. Yet despite the enormous number of critical analyses in literature of such topics as love, parent- child relationships, war, and growing up, relatively little has
been written about the way growing old has been presented by literary artists. A short story which addresses the aging process is
s Ernest Hemingways "A Clean,Well-Lighted Place." Although the setting is not clearly named, it is either in Spain or a place of Spanish speakers, as indicated by references to
such Spanish words as bodegas and nada (Birnbaum 42). An old man of about eighty is sitting in a caf? late at night
and, as on every other night, gets drunk. Nevertheless, the two waiters agree that he "is clean. He drinks without spilling." Although he walks unsteadily, he walks "with dignity.
The other waiter adds that the old man had tried to commit suicide the previous week. Although he apparently has much money, he "was in despair" and is lonely (Hemingway
1). Author, F. Scott Fitzgerald once said that Hemingway will be remembered for his great studies in fear. If you look at some
of those stories (Caldwell 90), theres a naked profession of a kind of terror that he must have lived with all his life. Heres a guy who got blown up
