meaningful existence. Discussion Before beginning the entries, it might be more useful to discuss the way in which the rule of law developed, and the philosophical idea that serving others
is important to anyone who wants to live a fulfilling life. But it seems as if Americans today are becoming more and more isolated from one another, rather than engaging
in useful civic projects or even simply interacting. There have been a number of articles about the way in which young people seem to be more involved with video games
and the Internet than they are with each other, leading experts to question what the future of our society will be if this trend to isolationism continues. But its not
just the "geeks" and younger people who appear to be disengaging from society. Robert Putnam notes that there has been a marked decline in membership in many different kinds of
social and civil organizations over the last two generations (Putnam, 1995). The decline has been felt in such diverse groups as churches and labor unions, PTA and veterans organizations (Putnam,
1995). This disengagement is serious, because it has an impact on society at every level, even if people dont recognize it. Recent studies have found a great deal of
