Prince Hamlet was the twenty-something son of King Hamlet and Queen Gertrude, who was a student at Wittenberg University. This is a religious institution where all heirs to the
throne would receive the instruction necessary to carry out their moral responsibilities of kingship. His father was a towering figure in the lives of his subjects, and especially in
the esteem of his son. There is a sense throughout Shakespeares play that Hamlet idolizes his father and fears falling short of the Kings great expectations for his only
son and successor. He seems to have an unusually close relationship with his mother, and may have as a child been jealous of his father in what Sigmund Freud
deemed as an Oedipus Complex, and secretly sought to take his place in Gertrudes affections. Hamlet is doing well in school,
and when he is not studying he is socializing with his "excellent good friends"(II.ii.233), Rosencrantz and Guilderstern. However, his perfect world is seemingly shattered overnight when he receives news
that his father has been murdered. If this was not devastating enough, the young man learns upon his return to Elsinore Castle that Gertrude has hastily remarried a mere
three months after her husbands death, to her husbands brother Claudius no less. Now, it is Claudius, not Hamlet, who wears the Danish crown, for as author Isaac Asimov
noted in his guide to Shakespeare, back in the Middle Ages, "The king was generally chosen from the royal family but not necessarily according to any strict order of relationship.
