The following paper examines a case study of what appears to be a first time mother, who is having difficulty breastfeeding her newborn. The paper answers questions posed by the student. A Case in Breastfeeding Describe proper positioning at the breast for breastfeeding: While this may seem like a simple process, and it perhaps is once one knows how to do it, for many it is not a simple first time activity. A mother may lay on her side and offer the infant the nipple, with the infant laying next to her, or she may hold the infant under and arm, or cradle the infant on her belly with the head near a nipple. Lacking sufficient space herein to detail all possibilities the most common method of initiating breastfeeding is to use "the palmar grasp or C-hold and the scissor grasp. With the palmar grasp, the mother places her thumb above the areola, and she places her remaining fingers under the breast to form a C or V" (Wagner, 2006). The nipple is then touched to the infants mouth which will, if the infant is hungry, instinctively open and take the nipple. The nipple should not necessarily be forced into the infants mouth. "In addition, the grasp should not impede the infants ability to place a sufficient amount of the areola into his or her mouth, which is necessary for adequate latch-on and suckling" (Wagner, 2006).
