debacle had been the unsuccessful invasion of Cuba on April 17, 1961, at Playa Gir?n which is also known as the Bay of Pigs("Bay of Pigs," 1991) . The
invasion consisted of approximately two thousand Cubans who had gone into exile after the revolution in 1959 (1991). They were encouraged by members of the CIA who had trained them
and the invaders believed that they would have military support from the United States (1991). They also believed that the invasion would cause a situation which would incite
the people of Cuba to rise up (1991). Ultimately, it was believed that the action would end with the overthrow of
Fidel Castros regime ("Bay of Pigs," 1991). Neither materialized, but unmarked planes from Florida bombed Cuban air bases before the invasion (1991). Cuban army troops then pinned down the exiles
and forced them to surrender in seventy-two hours (1991). The mission failed. While some believe that failure could have been avoided, no one could have imagined that it would have
failed to such an extent. The Eisenhower administration made plans for the Bay of Pigs attack and they trained anti-Castro Cubans in
Guatemala ("Bay of Pigs," 1991). The administration further obtained permission from the Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza to launch the invasion but after some hesitation, President John F. Kennedy allowed
the mission to go as planned (1991). At first, the State Department did not admit any direct links to the exiles, but the true American role became public a few
