increasing number of physical therapy positions in the United States. In fact, increasing access to training programs, increasing educational opportunities and increasing job placement rates have made physical therapy
one of the more attractive areas of healthcare. High job placement rates and multiple job offers have become common for new physical therapy graduates, but employers have also noted
an increasing competitiveness in the market as a result of increasing enrollment (Mathwig, Clarke, and Gramet, 2000). Chevan and Chevan (1998) have argued that demographic data and assessments
of populations can provide an interesting view of the career progress and changing needs in physical therapy employment. These researchers considered a view of the transformation of the population
of physical therapists and the educational and professional expectations in this field as it shifted between 1980 and 1990 (Chevan and Chevan, 1998). Researchers have recognized that while other
health care fields have provided a substantial body of information about their professionals, physic therapy has not assessed these elements, and have not moved to compile a database on existing
professionals in order to provide adequate demographic information about those meeting licensing requirements (Chevan and Chevan, 1998). The following is some interesting information that has been compiled by these
researchers in regards to specific elements related to the field of physical therapy: Social Characteristics of Physical Therapists in 1980 and 1990(a)
