my eye lodged for a moment upon the burning coals, and that old fancy of the crimson flag flapping from the castle tower came into my mind, and I thought
of the cavalcade of red knights riding up the side of the black rock. Rather to my relief the sight of the mark interrupted the fancy, for it is an
old fancy, an automatic fancy, made as a child perhaps. The mark was a small round mark, black upon the white wall, about six or seven inches above the mantelpiece"(Woolf).
So begins the essay entitled, The Mark On the Wall by Virginia Woolf. As a singular essay it defines that which was quintessentially Woolf, that complicated mix of genius, despair,
and madness. The Mark on the Wall and Professions for Women can not only be analyzed for their contributions toward literature, but also define the time and mindset in which
Woolf lived, created and struggled against. On a purely shallow level, The Mark on the Wall is a stream of consciousness work
which tells the tale of a womans thoughts as she gazes into a fire during the winter time. However, to only remain on this level of understanding is to deny
the genius of Woolf. The womans thoughts, though they seem to be idle ramblings, are quite symbolic of Woolfes views on the direction that she believes fiction should develop, in
particular, fiction intended for women. The remarkable life and times of Virginia Woolf did, indeed, give her the income and ability to have
