serious student of journalism, and the writer whose desire it is to make a living with words, the formatting, as well as the content are important. Feature writing is one
of the most utilized formats in journalism. But how did this come to be? Why was this format chosen over other types of formats? What makes the feature format and
structure more desirable than the next? Feature stories tend to read more like a nonfiction short story than a hard news story. The immediacy of the event is secondary
to the character being featured. Elements of literature, such as irony, theme, humor, tone, and characterization can be found within its structure. Many have suggested that this dilutes the news
or the reporting that it does bring to the story, but others disagree(Branston 2003). Feature stories allow the reporter to slow down the pace at which the information is
given to the reader(Hicks, Adams, Gilbert 1999). In fact, the reader is often given more in-depth coverage of an issue than they may have gotten from a newspaper piece. This
is because the two structures are different. The structure of the feature piece is designed to deliver a series of relevant points leading up to the main climax, as in
a short story, with a resolution and a conclusion. Feature stories tend to amplify the situation or issue for the reader to give further consideration than they might have had
the journalist simply used the inverted pyramid format that most newspapers utilize. Feature stories still give the reader the same information, and often more of it, but they do so
