while others state that they are not fully drawn characters and only serve as a backdrop for the protagonist. However, upon a careful study of the text, it seems more
likely that the characters exist to offer the audience insight into the downward spiral of Hamlets psychological state. This would be the case in the character of Fortnbras and his
ability to be decisive juxtaposed with Hamlets indecisiveness in certain matters. The student, in creating their own paper, might like to begin with a brief introductory synopsis so that
the roles of both Hamlet and Fortinbras are clearly defined. While most people will know who Hamlet is, many will have forgotten who Fortinbras is. In the beginning of
the story, young Prince Hamlet is escorted to the battlefield where his friends and servants lead him to the ghost of his father who tells him that Claudius has murdered
him and stolen his Queen. Hamlet vows to avenge his fathers death. This is the pivotal action upon which the whole play hinges(Bradley 175). Hamlet is convinced from this point
on that his Uncle is guilty. One might well wonder why Fortinbras would be included in the tale of Hamlet, and yet, he is absolutely necessary in order to
add the final brushstrokes to Hamlets character (or lack thereof). It is shown that Fortinbras, Prince of Norway, is a man of decision and is, in essence, more like Hamlets
father, than Hamlet was(Cousins). There are some striking similarities, the student will want to note, between Fortinbras and Hamlet. Both have vowed to avenge their fathers murder. However, Fortinbras goes
about exacting justice in a vastly different way than does Hamlet. Fortinbras acts decisively and goes to war in order to uphold his fathers honor. While Hamlet would still be
