said that one of the worlds most intimate mysteries still manages to yield new discoveries each year. What is this mystery? The human mind. In One Flew Over the Cuckoos
nest and The Yellow Wallpaper, one can readily see two varying perspectives on mental health. The obvious comparison of the two works is that they both address mental illness, the
slow descent of a perfectly normal person into a state of madness. In the Yellow Wallpaper, the main protagonist recounts how she came to her state of mental illness through
her day-to-day recollections and encounters between her and her husband. The main protagonist in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, has been labeled anti-social and a potential sociopath. Both
main characters have a stubborn refusal to accept their state and have a problem with authority. One might at first not notice this in The Yellow Wallpaper, but consider that
during the time in which this work was written, women were held captive within societys dictates. They could not be seen in public unescorted, nor could they own anything of
their own. Their lives were solely dictated by the men in their lives. The heroine in The Yellow Wallpaper escapes the reality of her situation through the patterns in the
wallpaper. The wallpaper can be said to have a dual symbolism. The wallpaper itself can be said to be representative of her mind. It is at first, simply fine wallpaper.
Then, she begins to notice that it is frayed in some places and as she begins to idly pick at it upon occasion, this can be said to symbolize her
state of mind and her descent into madness. On the other hand, the images of the women that she sees climbing up the wallpaper in the patterns can be said
