What is it about the area that makes it so unstable? Is it the geographic position, ethical diversity, poor economy? The answers are deceptive and complex at the same time. POLITICAL AND SOCIAL INSTABILITY In the end it cannot be said that the Europeans offered the Latin Americans any kindnesses by their gentle mentorship of a third world country. Yes, they brought them electricity and all the latest gadgets of every century of occupation, but what was traded was their identity, culture, heritage and method of surviving, a method that nearly five centuries later, they are still struggling to find. Since their independence, Central America has continued to experience turmoil, both internal and external. Central America experienced many changes over the course of the twentieth century, changes that were profoundly influenced by international economic contexts and by Latin Americas role in the global economy. As a result, Central America established opportunities and constraints for itself, forcing them to develop political responses to the problems of underdevelopment and poverty in the region. Many of these decisions continue to divide the country to this day. HISTORY The first invasion came at the hands of the Spanish and Portuguese who not only invaded the Incan Capital, but killed its leader, took the citys resources and hung most of the survivors from the city after that. What population did manage to survive the ransacking of their city later would die of smallpox which was introduced by the Spaniards. For nearly three centuries after this, the Spanish would greatly control most of Central America along with the Portuguese. Huge tracts of land were granted to the wealthy in the European countries.
