he the true founder of Christianity? A comparison of Paul and Jesus seems to show some striking similarities, as well as harsh contrasts. Paul of Tarsus was originally Saul
of Tarsus. The legend states that he spent a great deal of time carrying out the orders of the Pharisees in persecuting the new Jerusalem churches which had sprung up.
It was while on his way to Damascus that a great light blinded Saul, and in this light he had a vision. We are not told of the whole encounter,
only that Paul was transformed. Likewise, Jesus was transformed. In the Bible there is an accounting of Jesus going up into the mountains as the disciples watched he is
transformed by a great light. This great light is so bright that they can barely look upon it. When they are able to do so, they notice more than just
Jesus on the mountain. Paul shepherded and founded many underground Christian churches(Bruce 1977). He maintained them and made certain that the standards and doctrines were understood. In many ways
he became one of the first Bishops or Popes. This founding of churches was in contrast to the place of choice chosen by Jesus. Jesus Christ did not found any
churches, though many were convened in his name. Most of the accounts of Jesus in the Bible talk about large crowds of people that he met while on his three
year mission journey. He spoke primarily in private homes, on hillsides, and by the seashore. Both men traveled preaching the word of God. The differences however would remain in the
amount of ground covered. Jesus, himself, did not travel as widely as did Paul, nor did he live as long as Paul. Had Jesus lived longer, perhaps he might have
