power. In Shakespeares work, Antony and Cleopatra both love and power struggle with one another for dominance, and in the end this war dishonors them both. Long considered a classic
others would come along later to attempt a remake of the classic tragedy. John Dryden, a writer during the last half of the seventeenth century would feel compelled to offer
his interpretation of Shakespeares play, though many debate his ability to do true justice to the intent and content of Shakespeares play. In brief, Shakespeares Antony and Cleopatra is a
story about the war between head and heart. The ages old love triangle once again makes an appearance. Mark Antony is Ceasars friend and ally until he meets Cleopatra. Captivated
by her, Antony seems to abandon all reason where she is concerned. Wars are waged, angers flare, jealousies are aroused, and in the end, both lovers tragically take their own
lives. Of course, this isnt the first time that these themes have made an appearance in Shakespeares works. Romeo and Juliet, of course, feature the two star-crossed lovers whose
untimely end comes at their own hands. Both love affairs begin with deceit and end with deceit. Both sets of lovers face objection to their relationships and both feel as
if there is no hope at the end. Several other similarities exist between Antony and Cleopatra and other Shakespeare plays. Bits and pieces of Taming of the Shrew can
be seen in this play as well as the King Richard plays. For example, the love/hate relationship between Cleopatra and Antony, the hot temper and the cool intellect, are reminiscent
of the Taming of the Shrew, whereas the long sweeping grandeur of the battlefield scenes remind one of the King Richard plays. Also, in comparison to the Richard plays is
