industries and roads, methods of transporting goods, were all crippled or non-existent and there wasnt enough food for the people. A civilization that had flourished, arguably, longer than many others
was faced with the monumental task of rebuilding the country. When this occurred, a new system of political rule came into being. The United States was a major influence
in this move that saw Japan move from an Emperor lead country to a country whose decisions were made by a conglomerate much like the United States House of Representatives
and Senate. The new constitution of 1947 removed all power from the emperor, human rights agendas were put into place with a replica separation of religion and state, such as
the United States employed(Japan-guide 2001). The Korean War had an immense affect on the politics of the country in that economically Japan began to flourish and the ruling party to
come from this was the Liberal Democratic Party(Japan-Guide 2001). The political structure is strikingly similar to the United States. The Diet which is what the Japanese call their congress is
made up of a House of Representatives and a House of Councillors, both of which are elected by the Japanese people(Japan-guide 2001). Unlike the United States, the Japanese branches are
governed by a Prime Minister who is elected by the members of the Diet. The Prime Minister then chooses members of his cabinet, much like the President of the United
States chooses his executive cabinet members. The Japanese political structure also calls for a high court, which is also called the Supreme Court. The Prime Ministers cabinet members appoint judges
for this highest court. Elections for these diet positions occur every four years, three years for the House of Councillors, with other regional elections occurring throughout the country annually(Japan-guide 2001).
