larger questions of life. Both Gilgamesh and Marlow exhibit the turning point in their tales, where the material goods of life take a secondary stance to the spiritual. But, not
everyone seeks the same spiritual answers. Recovered from some stone tablets, the tale of Gilgamesh depicts the rise and fall of a great leader who desires to become immortal.
Out of this tale come some very basic human truths and themes, which oddly enough, still apply to the human condition today. The long epic tale shows the journey, both
literally and figuratively, of a spoiled despot, who matures into a great leader. However, the transformation was a difficult one. Gilgameshs spiritual journey began, it can be said, when his
best friend and traveling companion, Enkidu, dies. Gilgamesh is so upset by his friends death that he goes into a great depression. Sorrow was come into my belly. I
fear death; I roam over the hills. I will seize the road; quickly I will go to the house of Utnapishtim, offspring of Ubaratutu. I approach the entrance of the
mountain at night. Lions I see, and I am terrified. I lift my head to pray to the mood god Sin: For...a dream I go to the gods in prayer:
