Christ knew this. Paul from Tarsus, a disciple of Jesus, and Martin Luther King, a follower of Gandhi both learned their lessons well. To that end, some of their letters
of encouragement have stood the test of time to continue in their encouragement of others. However, it should be stated that as
a fully ordained pastor, Dr. King did not fight in the usual sense of the word. His type of fighting did not consist of fists, slurs, lynchings, or burning crosses.
Instead, following the precepts of Gandhi, he instituted a form of civil disobedience that was so effective that it is still used by protestors today. Even after the Supreme Court
struck down segregation in 1954, what the world now calls human-rights offenses were accepted practice in much of America. Before King and his movement, a tired and thoroughly respectable Negro
seamstress like Rosa Parks could be thrown into jail and fined simply because she refused to give up her seat on an Alabama bus so a white man could sit
down. His letter from a Birmingham Jail showed how determined he was, and that he was ultimately convinced and focused on the task
at hand. I wish you had commended the Negro sit-inners and demonstrators of Birmingham for their sublime courage, their willingness to suffer
and their amazing discipline in the midst of great provocation. One day the South will recognize its real heroes. They will be the James Merediths, with the noble sense of
purpose that enables them to face Jeering, and hostile mobs, and with the agonizing loneliness that characterizes the life of the pioneer. They will be old, oppressed, battered Negro women,
