the surface seem to be very different tales, it can be said that they also share a great deal in common. Issues such as a sense of alienation, coming of
age, and a love of the land are but a few of the characteristics which are commonly evident. However, issues which divide them are their approach and perspective to these
same issues. Thought both protagonists face similar issues and circumstances, their solution to their problems and their outlook on life stands in stark contrast. The student will wish to add
in the body of their paper (when constructing their own paper) that one of the first issues which are shared in common is that of alienation. Both Antonia and Fools
Crow feel isolated by their culture and heritage. Fools Crow is a Blackfeet Native Americana who is struggling with life on the reservation and is having to come to terms
with the duality which exists between cultural expectations and traditional values of his people, and those expected by the outside world. Antonia also suffers a type of alienation. Her
alienation is two fold as well. Being an immigrant from Bohemia, she and her family must assimilate into the American culture. Antonia also lives this duality between her inherited culture
and the culture in which she finds herself having to embrace. She is also alienated by her social class. Antonia, in contrast to Jim, must work very hard to make
a life for herself, whereas Jim belongs to a more affluent set of circumstances. He is able, for example, to go on to college, while she must go to work
as a maid, then later must work hard as a farmers wife. In contrast, however, though both characters suffer prejudice because of their minority status, it has to be
