For this assignment well take a look at the airline industry. Though Deutsche Lufthansa AG (holding company for Germanys Lufthansa Airlines) and U.S.-headquartered AMR Corp. (which oversees operations of subsidiary
American Airlines) are in different countries and have different local environments, both companies face similar challenges - the main ones being sluggish economies and rising fuel costs. These companies do
differ, however, in the ways in which they treat their labor. Approximately 65% of Lufthansas business involves passenger transportation. (Gilmer, 2011). Furthermore, the
company is building on an extensive international route network (Gilmer, 2011). In addition to passenger operations, Lufthansa receives revenue from a logistics segment (including Lufthansa Cargo) and maintenance and repair
segments (Lufthansa Technik) (Gilmer, 2011). LSG Sky Chefs (part of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding) also helps generate revenue by working for rival airlines (Gilmer, 2011). Lufthansa abides by regulations and
rules set forward by the Bundesstelle f?r Flugunfalluntersuchung (BFU). Germany itself is an interesting country from a labor standpoint because a great deal
of its workforce belongs to some union or another. Lufthansas workforce (in Germany) isnt much different - the majority of it is unionized.
AMR, in the meantime, is also a domestic carrier with a strong international emphasis. In an attempt to strengthen international operations, American Airlines has alliances with British Airways and
Iberia (Lambert, 2011), as well as other international airlines through its One World alliance. AMR, American Airlines and American Eagle follow rules and regulations set forward by the Federal Aviation
