PC market is a mature market, with high ownership levels already in place and consumers becoming more technically aware ands more and more computers that are bought are replacement or
second computers rather than first computers. Here we can first consider the size of the market for PCs and also their maintenance. In a recent survey it was found
that the penetration of PCs in the UK market was 49 computers per 100 population (Hobley, 2001). This includes both domestic users as well as company computers. The split in
this 49 per 1000 is 11 home PCs and 38 office PCs (Hobley, 2001). Therefore, the market may be seen as split between these two markets. However, in terms of
home use 44% of houses had a PC in the home, 36% are desktops and 8% are laptops (Hobley, 2001). 6 % own a palm top. However, not all pf
the owners use the equipment, and as such the market may be seen as those that use the equipment, not only those that own it, however, they are potential future
customers, 34% use the home desktops, 7% use the laptops and 5% use the palmtops (Hobley, 2001). This indicates that there is a market in existence that is already in
place. The consumers may be the smaller section, but they are also the section with the least technical expertise and as such may be those in most need of help
