are as many religions in the world as there are cultures. Each has numerous distinct contrasts from the others but they often share many similarities as well. One
of these similarities is a common goal, a goal of a greater human purpose and ethics of being. Through belief in religion individuals are given both explanation and goals
by which they can gauge their lives and those of others. Religion gives ultimate purpose (Haarsma, 1996). Some of the most interesting similarities and contrasts in religion can
be found in a comparison of certain aspects of Native American religion, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Native American religion is, of
course, as diverse as is the number of Native American cultures. There are varying estimates regarding the number of distinct Native cultures at the time of the European arrival
on this continent. These estimates typically vary between five-hundred and two-thousand. Even at the lower range of the estimate it should be apparent that there is an extreme
cultural diversity in that large cultural classification we refer to as Native Americans (Lord, 1996). There is one element, however, which is present in all Native American
Religions. That element is the integral tie between Native American spirituality and the environment. This tie was influential in shaping the cultural evolution of the varied Native American
groups. In most cases this relationship results in a deep respect for that environment. In order to explore this connection
