examines his sense of feeling out of place as a child, being both Christian and Arab. Said is perhaps better known as a literary critic and a man who also
was a writer of philosophical and political criticism. As such this book is far more personal than his other writings. The following paper offers a review of his work, discussing
authors purpose, theme, thesis and method of development. A Book Review of Out of Place by Edward Said Authors Purpose In
the beginning of his book he illustrates how he was diagnosed with, and was being treated for, leukemia when he began this book. Being a book about his childhood it
seems that the book was written for the purpose of reliving his childhood and coming to terms with his identity. He also indicates that "Out of Place is a record
of an essentially lost or forgotten world" (Said, 2000; ix). Theme This is a work that deals with, predominantly, Saids childhood
during the 30s and the 40s. He illustrates his feeling, as the title suggests, always feeling out of place with is family. He speaks of his confusion over who he
was as a child, but also later as an adult as he attended Princeton and Harvard. The theme involves both a historical examination of the Arab countries and of Saids
life. Thesis Again, as the title suggests, the thesis is how Said does not feel he belongs anywhere. However, as the
book progresses and he ages he begins to somehow appreciate this as well. It can well be argued that the thesis of Saids book is to find his identity as
