WE SHOULD NEVER FORGET We must never forget the events of September 11 nor the people who lost their lives on that day. To erect a bronze statue or a memorial on the site is one idea, but in order to truly remember the events of that day and bring some closure to those who were so directly affected would be a most fitting tribute. And what should our retribution for this terrorist act be? There needs to be closure on that act as well. Feelings, of course run very high and the majority of people feel nothing will suffice until we destroy those who have tried to destroy us. In her book Between Vengeance and Forgiveness: Facing History After Genocide and Mass Violence, Martha Minow discusses this very thing. Should we forgive our enemies as some faiths believe, or should we do everything in our power to exact our revenge? Perhaps, she suggests, there is some medium-ground that would do a little of both without going too extremely far in one way or another.
