Luther ? May, 2000 ? properly! Sometime during October 31, 1517, the day before the Feast of
All Saints, 33-year-old Martin Luther posted a set of theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany (Gritsch 35). It wasnt the first time that something
had been posted on that particular door; there were numerous antecedents prior to Luther posting his document because within that community, this door functioned as a sort of bulletin board
for various announcements that related to academic and church activities (G!ritsch 35). Scholars agree that when Luther wrote the 95 points of
debate in Latin, his intent was to invite fellow Christian scholars to a "Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," which the official title for the 95 theses (Anonymous
21). The heart of the document concerns the use, and abuse, of this institution of the Catholic Church, which was practiced widely during this period. However, as to
exactly how the theses should be taken is still a topic on which one can easily find widely differing opinions. Some scholars argue that while the 95 Theses have
been regarded as a bold declaration of independence for the Protestant church" (Anonymous 21), some experts point out that when Luther wrote out his famous theses, he did so as
a faithful monk and priest, who had been appointed professor of biblical theology at the !University of Wittenburg (Gritsch 35). Within this group, it is pointed out that Luther did
not directly attack the concept of indulgences, as illustrated in Theses 73 where he wrote, "...the pope justly thunders against those who by any means whatsoever contrive harm to the
