The following paper offers up a look at chapters 8-12 of the work. 60 On Up by Lillian Rubin Chapter 8 is titled The Shrinking Ties that Bind. The student can even briefly look at the chapter and see that it is a section that discusses friendships. Friendships are crucial in the lives of all people and in ones older years they are just as, if not more, crucial to the happiness and overall wellness of an individual. The author notes the following in relationship to friendships: "Intimate social ties, once an integral part of daily life and known to be associated with a host of psychological benefits, which translate into physical well-being, are shrinking or nonexistent. One-quarter of Americans say they have no one with whom they can discuss personal problems, more than double the number who were similarly isolated in 1985" (Rubin, 2007; 85-86). The student can see that friendships are important, and that they have been changing through the decades as people move away and become more isolated from one another. There are many ways in which this is prominent, or why this happening, in society.
