development and the outcome of the war. It is perhaps difficult to argue what are the most important events, in relationship to narrowing it down to five, for there are
likely smaller events that made a great impact on the direction the war took, although they may not be well known. With that in mind the following paper examines 5
of the most important, or most obviously important, events in the Vietnam War. The events examined are the Dien Bien Phu attack, the Geneva Conference, Operation Rolling Thunder, attack on
Khe Sanh, and the infamous My Lai Massacre. Dien Bien Phu Attack One of the first major events in Vietnam came long before the United States truly entered into
war in the country. It was in 1954 that "Dien Bien Phus position was hopeless. French artillery and mortars had been progressively silenced by murderously accurate Communist Viet Minh artillery
fire, and the monsoon rains had slowed down supply drops to a trickle and transformed the French trenches and dugouts into bottomless quagmires" (Fall, 2005). The French had been existing
on little more than instant coffee and "the Vietminh under General Giap began an assault on the hills protecting the Dien Bien Phu air base" (Vietnam War: Summary, 2005). The
French were greatly outnumbered and they were trapped. This is when they appealed to the United States for help (Vietnam War: Summary, 2005). America discussed its options and chose to
do nothing so that the French surrendered (Vietnam War: Summary, 2005). This led to the end of the French involvement in Vietnam and would also spell the beginning of the
